The team behind this comparison

The Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital works inside a tertiary general hospital. Ke He, MD, is the reviewing physician for this site and performs both the laser and the microneedling it compares. Dr. Shaoliang Wang provides the surgical view for the scarring that excision rather than resurfacing would serve, and Dr. Yongbo Jia the dermatological assessment of active acne and skin disease that has to be settled first.

Ke He (何锞)

Deputy Director & Head of Skin & Laser Aesthetics · Attending Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Acne scar assessment · fractional laser and microneedling · pigment risk in darker skin

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital and head of its skin and laser aesthetic service — and she is the lead physician of this site. A core specialist formerly at the Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Department of Xinqiao Hospital, affiliated with Army Medical University, she has worked on the clinical front line in skin laser and injectable aesthetics for more than 20 years, serving over ten thousand patients.

On this subject Dr. He works in a fixed order. She records what kind of scarring is present before anything is offered — depressed, tethered, broad with redness, or a mix — and whether it is still changing. She examines the scars at rest and again with the skin moved, because a tethered scar behaves differently under tension, and she checks skin tone, sun exposure and how many days of visible healing the patient can carry. Then she says which option matches, if either. She declines to treat while acne is active, after isotretinoin, or where scarring is keloidal.

Clinical focus

  • Reading a scar pattern before a treatment is named
  • Fractional laser and microneedling, and the scar types each reaches
  • Pigment risk and conservative planning in darker skin tones
  • Sequencing treatment when acne is still active
  • When to decline treatment, and what to do instead

Academic roles & achievements

  • Member, Laser Medicine Group, Chinese Medical Association Plastic Surgery Branch
  • Member, Facial Rejuvenation Group, Chinese Medical Association Plastic Surgery Branch
  • Member, Chongqing Plastic Surgery Quality Control Center
  • Published 5 papers, holds 5 national patents, and introduced 2 new clinical techniques

Neither is the first step

It is often assumed that needling is the gentle beginning and laser the stronger answer held in reserve. The two reach different scars, so the order does not work that way. A tethered scar may be treated with needling while a textured one is treated with laser, and a mixed pattern may need both. Neither is a stage of the other.

Start with the scar, not the treatment

Arrange an assessment. We will say which type of scarring is present, what each option would change and what it would leave as it is, and when waiting is the better answer.
